Hulu to Stream Designing Women on Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day on August 26th, 2019 will commemorate the 99th year of a woman’s right to vote. It’s a day to remember the hard-fought battle women endured to get the 19th amendment adopted into the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits the government’s prevention of a citizen’s right to vote on the basis of sex. It’s also a day to celebrate Designing Women coming to Hulu.

I know, I know. Not where you thought this story was going. But trust me, they’ll be plenty of articles about the anniversary on the day of. I promise I’ll even publish a separate story with the best articles on Women’s Equality Day. But this one is about my love for Designing Women with an honorable mention to Hulu, for not only bringing back this blast from the past but also streaming some of my other favorite ladies which include the women of Living Single, Daria and my current prayer-come-true, a whole new season of Veronica Mars. But back to Designing Women.

Yes, every progressive girl’s binge-watching wish will be granted on Women’s Equality Day. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, Designing Women was this fabulous show in the 1980s about working women with something to say. These women were extremely smart, ambitious, strong and didn’t hold back their opinions on love, racism, politics, sexuality, gender inequality, you name it. In particular, the character of Julia Sugarbaker played by the late and great Dixie Carter was the very definition of a fierce feminist who’s words were her superpower. The character of Charlene played by Jean Smart said it best when she came up with a description of Julia when she said, “If words could kill, this lady would be on death row.”

Her speeches became these iconic moments in TV that made me proud to be a woman and helped me find and appreciate my voice. To have this show come back to us on such an important day, a day where women’s voices were finally on the journey to being heard is everything. I can’t wait to lounge on my couch revel in all things feminism. I’m swooning with the emoji heart eyes.
