She’s a Leader

For many of us, it’s not until we are challenged or tested by a situation or particular circumstance that we and others around us get to see what we’re made of. In my personal experience, it’s women who step up to the plate when life seems to be more than we can bear. The same can be said for New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern.

This weekend saw one of the worst mass shootings and terrorist attacks in the country’s history. An Australian white supremacist targeted Chirstchurch mosque in New Zealand, killing 50 members and injuring 40 more. One day after the attack, Ardern stated that the country’s gun laws would change and the funeral expenses, as well as the financial needs of the victim’s families, would be taken care of.

This is a leader. I don’t know much about her and yes I’ve read up on some legitimate criticisms of her administration, but regardless, this is what a leader looks like. The only thing my country's politicians can offer after a mass shooting is a thought and a prayer. As a believer in Christ, I’m personally offended by a thought and a prayer when as a politician, you have the ultimate platform to create real change. I do believe in prayer, but…” faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:17 I am as devastated for Christchurch as I am whenever these attacks take place. But at least New Zealand has a leader who is willing to create real change so that nothing like this happens again.
