If You Have Nothing Nice to Say

About 40% of the Democratic party in the House voted against the latest border aid bill. The bill increased funding to handle the Trump Administration produced crisis at the border. What the bill didn’t do was include humanitarian stipulations, causing nearly 100 democratic house members to vote against it.

This bill was a win for Mitch McConnell, Republicans, and the Trump Administration, and even though the Democrats are the majority in the House and could have passed a better version of the bill, Nancy Pelosi caved into giving the conservatives what they wanted.

So while a nice chunk of the Democratic party voted against the bill due to there being no real change or real care for asylum seekers, Pelosi only pointed out the votes of four freshman congresswomen known as “the Squad,” and includes Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ayanna Pressley.

Pelosi dismissed the four women when publicly asked about the criticism she’s received regarding the bill. “All of these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” said Pelosi about the four congresswomen. “But they didn’t have any of the following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”

It's clear Pelosi was has such disdain for these women. Ocasio-Cortez responded to Pelosi's words in a tweet and said, “The public ‘whatever’ is called public sentiment. And wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.” Ilhan Omar responded to Ocasio-Cortez, tweeting, “You know, they’re just salty about WHO is wielding the power to shift ‘public sentiment’ these days, sis. Sorry, not sorry.”

Both women are right. Pelosi is dismissing the public’s embrace of these women who advocate for policies that actually bring about change. The public can no longer relate to someone like Pelosi because like the very people she claims to be against, Mitch McConnell and Trump, she caters to and works for her rich donors.

She’s one of these Democrats that don’t have a problem with the overwhelming amounts of money in politics, which means overwhelming amounts of influence in and over our political landscape in this country. She and other establishment democrats, many of them running for the 2020 presidential election, can be bought by corporations, Wall Street, billionaires, etc. So her credibility these days is one of distrust and anger from leftist voters.

It’s a shame. Democrats do so little with their platform and power these days. They could have introduced and yes passed an aid bill that actually helped those suffering on our border. We have children and entire families from Central America, a place where death was looming and where the U.S. is greatly responsible for the unrest and instability of that region, and we have them locked away in detention centers under conditions so deplorable, that one too many have lost their lives.

Democrats could have changed all of that but they chose not to. Instead, they passed a weak bill, Democrats remain divided, and Pelosi’s words gave Trump the ammunition to attack these progressive ladies, saying they should go back to where they came from. Without these four congresswomen and many of the liberals voted into this current congressional class, this party would be doomed. We want policies that give the people of this country a chance to live a life of dignity.
