Faux Pas Nothing
The next sentence is truly something I thought was a joke. Retail store Forever 21 is apologizing to customers after diet bars were included with online orders.
Body image is a huge issue among women and girls, and to send diet bars, specifically Atkins bars, along with orders is incredibly insensitive. After backlash from customers on social media, the store apologized and released a statement blaming third party e-commerce companies who send free products with their online orders.
Some customers complained they received the bars with their plus-size orders, and to that claim, the store responded and said the bars were included with all orders in all sizes and categories for a limited time. They added, “This was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused to our customers, as this was not our intention in any way.”
This lack of awareness reminds me of the H&M controversy when they advertised a black kid wearing a monkey sweatshirt. I’ve never looked at H&M the same after that. I hope these companies learn from these tone-deaf events.
