New Bill Would Block Federal Funds for 2026 Men’s World Cup Due to Gender Pay Gap
Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has proposed a measure that would withhold federal funds for the 2026 Men's World Cup until the women’s team receives equal pay.
With the U.S. co-hosting the men’s World Cup, Manchin’s bill would pull resources from host cities for infrastructure and security, sporting facilities looking for an upgrade and would affect the State Department issuing visas and other requests for FIFA officials.
World soccer champs, the U.S. women’s soccer team who just won their 4th World Cup title, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation demanding equal pay. The Democratic Women’s Caucus recently sent a letter to U.S. Soccer calling on the federation to close the gender pay gap between men's and women’s soccer teams.
The Realist Woman’s take:
As a raging liberal, I personally don’t get too excited over anything establishment Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin does, but I am all for this bill. If passed, it would really hit the higher ups in the soccer world where it hurts; in their pocketbooks.
Congress has the right to withhold federal funds to push through equality. It’s a shame that it has to be done this way, but at this point, money talks and if pulling money from this global event is going to bring about change, then let’s do it.
