Pro-Choice Demonstrations Take Place Nationwide Opposing Abortion Restrictions
More than 400 pro-choice demonstrations took place nationwide Tuesday in response to the recent laws passed restricting abortion rights. The ACLU, Planned Parenthood and NARAL, among others, served as sponsors of the protests with thousands joining the #StopTheBans rallies from coast to coast.
Presidential candidates senators Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker joined demonstrators, with Klobuchar telling the crowds she wasn’t going to allow lawmakers from moving the country backward. Cory Booker called on men to join the fight for what he defined as an “assault on human dignity and freedom.”
This past month the state of Alabama criminalized abortion, approving an all-out ban on the medical practice, while Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri have either approved or are expected to approve severely restrictive abortion laws.
The Realist Woman’s take:
What’s happening all across this country is a majority of old white males think it’s their right to tell women what to do with their bodies. We have to make it clear to them that they do not own us or control us. Therefore, they may not make not one goddamn decision about what we do with our bodies. I’m proud of all of the demonstrations that took place to make that message clear.
If women dared to tell men they couldn’t use viagra and had no choice but to live with limp penises, or mandated vasectomies as a form of birth control, they would be outraged that anyone besides men would make those kinds of decisions for them. They will not take my rights away from me and I am grateful for the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the many organizations, protestors, and lawmakers who fight for our continued right to choose.
