U.N. Chief Says COVID-19 Pandemic Hurting Gender Equality
In a video message, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned the COVID-19 pandemic is increasing inequality for women and “is having devastating social and economic consequences for women and girls.”
“Nearly 60% of women around the world work in the informal economy, earning less, saving less, and at greater risk of falling into poverty.”
Guterres doesn’t hold back on the dangers for women during this time of quarantine, which has led to lost jobs, a lack of any education for girls in the developing world and an increase in domestic violence.
“These currents are combining as never before to defeat women’s rights and deny women’s opportunities,” he said. He’s concerned that the progress made towards women’s equality is going to be lost, taking years to regain.
