900 Women’s Clinics Lose Funding After New Gag Rule
More than 900 women’s clinics have lost federal funding due to the new restrictions from the gag rule, endangering the lives of countless women in the United States.
Under the Trump administration’s gag rule, health clinics are denied Title X funding if they perform abortions or if they refer women to abortion providers. Clinics have had to choose between walking away from the program and looking for alternative funding or halting services that include abortions or family planning practices.
As a result, five states and clinics in 26 states have walked away from the program with brown and black women suffering as casualties of this political bull from conservatives and the Trump administration.
These clinics provide care for underserved communities, many of them made up of lower-income black and brown women. The cancer screenings these clinics provide will now become more expensive as a result of the loss in funding. According to the CDC, Latina women have some of the highest rates of cervical cancer in this country. Preventative measures to reduce the number of late-stage diseases include cancer screenings, something many women will receive less of.
With funding from Title X, clinics were able to provide women with birth control, which according to experts on reproductive health, greatly reduces the number of abortions.
The Realist Woman’s take:
Politicians who have it out for anyone providing legal and safe abortions, negate the importance and necessity of women’s clinics. Women’s clinics save the lives of millions of women every year with the limited but instrumental care they give to women. With that said. yes, many of these clinics provide abortion services but more so, reduce the number of abortions taking place with the birth control they give women.
This is why I wholeheartedly believe men should NEVER be able to make decisions about women’s health whenever those decisions are going to harm and eventually kill women. These people are not pro-life by any sense of the term. When you deny a women’s clinic the opportunity to provide low to no-cost cancer screenings, you’re killing women. You're not pro-life.
